Remembering II exhibition at The RWA in Bristol until 28 September 2014

As part of Back From the Front: Art, Memory and the Aftermath of War, the Royal West of England Academy has worked in partnership with Bristol 2014 to create a series of exhibitions, featuring input from artists, writers, architects and composers to the themes of commemoration and memorialisation. The latest, Remembering II runs until the 28th September on every day of the week except Monday. The exhibition is free and showcases some of the finest in local and international art.

Remembering II explores memory through a selection of mediums, examining the integral relationship between memorials and material. Featured artists include Columbian artist Diana Beltran Herrera who manipulates the ephemerality of paper, transforming the traditional commemorative wreath into a work of art, Paul Gough who utilises the fabric of paper as the foundation for mark-making in chalk and pastel in his ‘Stoneology Series’ of drawings, Architect and UWE lecturer Elena Marco who explores the physical and philosophical framework of memorialisation through a collaborative project based on the mustard gas factory at Avonmouth, and Bristol-based ceramicist Hanne Rysgaard and fine artist Anton Goldenstein who have created a memorial to War Poet Rupert Brooke's last meal, which he ate on English soil in February 1915 at Avonmouth. Contemporary artist Gail Ritchie also shows a tree ring drawing from her beautifully rendered Memorial Series creating a metaphorical representation of lives cut short by trauma or conflict.

The brief for each of these artists’ specially commissioned work was to create something that speaks to today’s audiences, in order to produce a fitting commemoration of local, national and international themes of conflict and remembrance.
