Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings back in Bristol at The Colston Hall on 28 October

The unstoppable Sharon Jones marks her triumphant return with a string of UK dates, including a performance at Bristol’s Colston Hall on the 28th October.

After a career spanning five albums and a run of singles that have sold well over half a million copies worldwide, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings headline festivals all over the world, continuing to give excellent performances despite the hardships life has presented them.

At 58, Jones finds herself no stranger to hardships and heartbreak; growing up before the Civil Rights Movement and raised midst the brutality of sixties and seventies Brooklyn marked with blows of racism and poverty. She battled rejection by a record industry obsessed with fitting artists into their skinny, young, light-skinned mould, working days as an armed guard at the notorious Riker’s Island Correctional Facility.  At last she hit it off with a remarkable group of passionate young musicians whose tight, tough sound fit her voice like a glove. From that chance studio session Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings were born.

Along with new friends The Dapettes, the band have created their strongest record yet. From the relentless stomping entrance of Retreat!, the bounce of the anthemic We Get Along, and the irresistible syncopations of Stranger to My Happiness, straight through to the intoxicating groove of Slow Down, Love. It is also arguably the most impressive studio work to date from Grammy-winning engineer and Daptone co-owner Gabriel Roth (aka Bosco Mann) all written and recorded at Daptone’s analogue “House Of Soul” studio/headquarters in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn where Sharon herself wired the electrical outlets.

Sharon has shared the stage and studio with stars as big as Prince, Lou Reed and Michael Bublé, and in January this year she and the Dap-Kings added Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese to their list of collaborators: the band appeared as themselves in Scorsese’s blockbuster success The Wolf Of Wall Street. Barely a few months from recovering from illness, Sharon and the band were welcomed with open arms on British soil playing a sold out show at London’s Roundhouse and appearing on both Later… with Jools Holland and BBC1’s Andrew Marr Show all in the same week of May 2014.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings will be performing at the Colston Hall on the 28th October, supported by Lee Fields and the Expressions. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster on this link for £28 including the booking fee.
