This weekend in Bristol there are loads of things to do and even the mini heatwave on Friday might hang around for most of Saturday and Sunday. Our brief list of ideas is shown below and for a full listing just use the calendar to the right or the What's On tab above where you can pick by venue or type of event - or both. Whatever you do, make sure you have a superb weekend in Bristol.

Dead Dog in a Suitcase at The Bristol Old Vic until 25th October 

 

Based on John Gay's classic musical satire, the Beggar's Opera, Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs) is busting with wit, wonder and weirdness. Kneehigh presents an extraordinary cast of actors and musicians, cavorting their way through this twisted morality tale of our times.

 

Puccini’s Madame Butterfly at Tobacco Factory Theatres until 25th October

 

Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha girl, has fallen for Pinkerton, a suave American naval officer. Giving up all she has, she marries him, only for Pinkerton to then abandon her. Left alone for three years bringing up their son, she patiently waits. But when her husband finally returns, her hopes for their future together are cruelly dashed.


Weston Beach Race

 

For those wanting a trip out of Bristol, not that we would know why, The Weston Beach Race takes place all weekend in Weston-super-Mare. The main racing takes place over the Saturday and Sunday but there are lots of activities on the Friday when all the riders start arriving. The event starts on Friday 17th October and tickets are available from 16th October from the Box Office on the seafront. Adult tickets are £20 and children tickets are £5. Children under 4 go free.

Dizraeli and The Small Gods + Cate Ferris at The Fleece

 

Dizraeli & The Small Gods are a 6-piece band playing their very own breed of psychedelic hiphop music. With award-winning rapper & multi-instrumentalist Dizraeli on lead vocals and featuring world Female Beatbox Champion, Bellatrix, they are utterly unlike anything you know. Their live show has never failed to bring holy fire to any stage they stand on. Tickets are £10.

 

Whole Lotta Led at The Tunnels

 

Whole Lotta Led has been together for 18 years and still going strong! Last years nationwide tour saw Whole Lotta Led confirm their reputation as one of the UK top tribute bands and they gained even more fans. They are of course a Led Zeppelin tribute band. Tickets are £12

 

The Wytches, Piano Wire and Otis Elliott at The Exchange

 

Brighton based grungers The Wytches released their debut album ‘Annabel Dream Reader’ through Heavenly Recordings in August and the surf doom trio have unveiled their new single ‘Wire Frame Mattress’. Tickets are £8.

 

Alex Taylor at The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer

 

Alex Taylor is a UK based singer songwriter and one of the shining lights of the acoustic scene as well as a troubadour of world-class standing. If you get to see him perform live then make sure and grab the opportunity - be prepared for an energetic and passionate vocal performance, dextrous and original acoustic playing and some loop pedal trickery for good measure. Alex has a unique style splices together elements of jazz, folk and electronica to place his powerful, shape-shifting voice firmly in the spotlight. Entry is Free.

 

What The Frock! Female Comedy at Mauretania on Park Street

 

For this October show, they'll be welcoming acts including: Viv Groskop ('Brilliant,' Jo Brand), Alice Matthews (What The Frock! Award 2014 - runner-up), Becky Brunning (Bath Comedy Award 2014 finalist), Bisha K Ali ('Killer one liners,' Viv Groskop), and Scummy Mummies ('Likeably straight-talking,'The Daily Telegraph). Tickets are £7 in advance or £10 on the door.

 

Joel Compass at Bunker - The Student Nightclub on Clifton Triangle

 

Joel Compass is an R&B and soul singer from London best known for his 2014 single "Forgive Me", which reached the top 40 in the UK charts! The Bunker has thought of everything to make it the night you won't forget. Expect CO2 and confetti cannons, studio crew and much more. Entry is £5.

 

Tapas and Tunes at Harveys Cellars on Denmark Street

 

Kevin Real Deal presents every Friday at Harveys Cellar the Tapas and Tunes night. Playing the best tunes from the 70's, 80's and 90's, Harveys really is they best place to be.

Market at The Moon is back in Stokes Croft 

 

Market at the Moon is a weekly market held every Saturday from Noon until 6pm in Stokes Croft, Bristol. Just head over to the space between The Full Moon and Attic Bar. Stall numbers vary from 20-40 per week and there are normally workshops and live music. Entry is free however please give donations where requested and support the local and independent traders selling their products and services at the market.

 

Bristol Rovers v Forest Green Rovers at The Memorial Stadium

 

Bristol City travel to The Ricoh Arena to play Coventry City and so it is Bristol Rovers turn to play at home. The away fixture was held back on Bank Holiday Monday 25 August 2014 and Bristol Rovers returned from their trip up the M5 with a point following their 1-1 draw. Andy Monkhouse had put Bristol Rovers ahead in the 55th minute but Forest Green Rovers pulled back an equaliser in the 68th minute.

 

The Neighbourhood at The Trinity Centre

 

The band has come a long way since the 5 friends from Los Angeles formed in 2011.Their previous single ‘Sweater Weather’ has now sold well over 2 million records and the band have enjoyed increased publicity following numerous television appearances on some of the US’ biggest TV shows such as Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel. Tickets are £14.75.

 

Antarctic Monkeys at The Fleece

 

Formed in March 2006 from a jamming session, the Antarctic Monkeys became a phenomenon in their own right, travelling the UK and Europe with numerous tours. The demand is now more than ever. Firmly established on the tribute scene, their live show has the power, passion and the creative edge to whip audiences into a frenzy when delivering the powerful tunes of the Arctic Monkeys as the way they should be. Tickets are £12.

 

Lamb instore at Rise Music on Clifton Triangle

 

The duo will be playing tracks from their new album, 'Backspace Rewind' which will be available from Rise. Entry is free and the gig starts at 4pm.

Head to the bottom of Park Street every Saturday for Crème de la Crème at Java nightclub in Bristol. An evening of top tunes and people dressed to impress at one of the premiere venues in the City. A great place to spend your Saturday evening whether you are out on a date or with a group of friends.

 

John On Me Tod at The Anchor Inn, Thornbury

 

On Saturday 18th of October, John On Me Tod will be at The Anchor Inn with his guitars, playing and singing live and leaping about - you can't miss that! Bringing covers from classic songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's, you won't be able to stand still after John takes over the stage.

 

The Best in UK Stand Up with Elis James & Co at The Colston Hall

 

Be delighted by this Welsh story teller intricately woven tales about anything from his first kiss to meeting a famous sports presenter, wearing tap shoes to a wedding and buying a cycling helmet. According to The List, Elis James is “a complete joy”, delivering anecdotes with “a hefty dose of charisma and winning self-deprecation” (Chortle). James has appeared on Rhod Gilbert’s show on BBC Radio Wales and The Rob Brydon Show, and is an Edinburgh Festival regular. Tickets £12.90.

The Candle Club at The Golden Guinea every Sunday evening

 

The Candle Club at The Golden Guinea is Bristol's longest running Open Mic night.  Organised by Marc Venus, it is an evening comprising of both booked acts as well as open mic performers in Bristol. It's always a terrific atmosphere and a great way to round off any weekend, plus the music, comedy and poetry are always good as is the DJ'ing between acts. 

 

Spear of Destiny, Idiot Strength and Blush at The Fleece

 

Spear Of Destiny were formed in 1983 after the demise of Kirk Brandon’s post punk iconic rockers Theatre Of Hate. Tickets are £13.50.

 

Pub Poker at Pranj's Bar on Corn Street

 

Head over to Pranj's Bar on Corn Street in Bristol every Sunday evening to take part in the Betfred Pub Poker League. The action starts at 7.30pm and the games are friendly with tournament points up for grabs and qualification into the monthly area finals. It's free to join and beginners are always welcome. There is an online link for the bar so you can keep track of your tournament standings.
