Getting to Know Bristol - GLR Radio Station

Posted on: 29 Oct 2014

There's a new radio station in Bristol called GLR and 365Bristol got in touch with Roger Noble, Programme Director, to find out more about them! You can listen to GLR online through their website, www.glronair.com, or on your smart phone via the Tune in app and then 'GLR

When did you set up GLR?

We had idea at Christmas last year as many businesses were not being advertised enough, so we set up the task of being on air and finding some premises and moved in our current home in March, and started test transmissions from April, and fully on the air from May.

Are you from Bristol?

Me personally yes, and the station, broadcasts near Kingswood.

How's business?

We do the radio station to offer the choice and to talk about Bristol as a whole, unlike the others who are sadly leaving the area, to become big corporate brands, and we believe in local, is the way forward, and are currently looking for advertisers and sponsors at a cost effective price.

Tell us about your business?

We are media outlet aiming for the market of 18-32, with our music policy 90s, 00s, and today, with local presenters, who talk local, love Bristol, most recently broadcasting from the Harbour Festival, Foodies Festival and of course the International Balloon Festival.

How do you find running an independent radio station in Bristol?

It's a tough market, as you have the corporate brands every where, we just need local businesses to take us serious, like they would with any one else, treat us as fairly and equally with us and give us a chance to build relationships, with organisations and businesses, here in Bristol.

Where do you like to eat out in Bristol?

It is a favour thing of mind, so I can really name one I'm afraid.

What's your favourite place in Bristol?

I do like a walk along the Severn Estuary at Severn Beach.

Where do you see GLR in 5 years time?

I would like to see us, develop and broadcast on a bigger platform, DAB would be great, and to get more people interested in the industry, and people to take us seriously.

What advice would you give to any aspiring Bristol small business owners?

Social Media (twitter/facebook) is the way forward and to explore new ways of spreading the message about your business, unlike the usual outlets which are sadly fading away. Start talking to people, and keep taking any openings you get.

If you were Mayor of Bristol for a day which one thing would you change?

Traffic congestion is one of Bristol's biggest problems, if i were Mayor for the day, I would like to see an underground system, sorted and being used by everyone.
