Bristol Business of the Week is Mack Daddys Hair Salons

Posted on: 11 Dec 2014

This week our Bristol Business of the Week goes to Mack Daddy's Hair Salons of which there are now three in our great city, located on Park Row, Gloucester Road and North Street. 365Bristol caught up with owner Sean Homes to chat about hairdressing, education and helping businesses and individuals prosper.

Sean Homes, owner of Mack Daddy's Hair Salons in BristolWhen did you set up Mack Daddys?

It all originally started back in 1998 and we've not got 3 salons located on Park Row in the city centre, Gloucester Road in Bishopston and North Street in Bedminster all with all of course with fantastic stylists.

Are you from Bristol?

Yes, I'm born and bred in Bristol. I entered the hairdressing industry straight after school the did a bit of travelling around the world before settling back here and opening Mack Daddys.

How's business?

It's going really well as we are a bit different from other salons in the City. The concept behind Mack Daddys Hair Studios in Bristol is to provide the best stylists to ensure your haircut grows out really well, is easy to do and looks good every day. We are independent and one of the few salons that run a truly unisex hairdressing business.

How do you find running an independent business in Bristol?

Mack Daddys are all about attracting the best stylists, all of which are self employed so they need to make sure they are doing the best job at all times. Both our client and staff retention rates are extremely high which is a great measure of our success.

Where do you like to eat out in Bristol?

We enjoy family treats for the kids at restaurants such as Jamie's Italian on Park Street or if we've got a babysitter The Ox on Corn Street is great for a steak. I really like to help promote other local businesses and the new Plead the Fifth American bar and diner on Park Row is well worth a visit too.

What's your favourite place in Bristol?

With kids it is all about activities for them, so whether playing up on the Downs, Leigh Woods or the many parks in Bristol it's great to be able to get them out in the fresh air!

Where do you see Mack Daddys in 5 years time?

Continuing to sustain our current business model and retaining the great stylists we've got.

What advice would you give to any aspiring Bristol business owners?

Invest in the youngsters who need to be given a chance. Train them well and watch them flourish. Plough back your knowledge and experience to the next generation that might not be getting the opportunities. It's all about instilling a great work ethic but also make it fun.

If you were Mayor of Bristol for a day which one thing would you change?

I would shake up the education system and start helping businesses with rate relief and tax advantages to employ and train those coming straight out of school into the workplace.
