National Pothole Day on Thursday 15 January 2015 - Let the road users' revolution begin

Posted on: 12 Jan 2015

Road users are starting their own rebellion against the scourge of potholes with National Pothole Day on Thursday 15 January 2015.

You may have noticed an unusually high proportion of recent media coverage about these unpleasant, disruptive and damaging craters in the road - and for good reason. The reality is that those who navigate the highways and byways of this fair aisle feel they just aren't getting value for money.

Whether you're a motorist or motorcyclist, there's no question the UK's road infrastructure has taken a brutal pounding over recent years. A combination of freezing temperatures, flooding and a huge surge in the overall volume of traffic has left our roads in a pretty sorry state.

But now road users have had enough and the backlash is about begin. We're on the cusp of a pothole revolution, comrades. After all, motorists pay a not-insignificant sum in road tax every year, so it's only fair and reasonable to expect that money to be reinvested back into the region's roads and motorways to keep them well maintained, right?

As any motorist will tell you, colliding with a pothole is not only a danger to your driving but hitting too many of them can cause considerable damage to your vehicle and result in a rather hefty repair bill.

Motorist's frustration with the pothole epidemic sweeping the roads of the UK has hit a critical meltdown - and National Pothole Day is the perfect opportunity for you to have your say.

More importantly, it's a vital way of galvanizing those pen-pushers, bureaucracy bods and fatuous spokesweasels at Bristol City Council out of their sedentary, mealy-mouthed slumber. They have to be made accountable for the hard-earned tax pounds we pour into their coffers every year.

If they can spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on under-used cycle lanes, exorbitant management salaries, barmy road calming measures (20 mph, anyone?) and plagues of those multitudinous vermin commonly known as consultants, then they can find the funds to ensure our roads are maintained to their safest driveable standards.

Have you spotted any dangerous potholes on your travels? Have you been injured or your car damaged by one of these dangerous craters? Got any pics?  Let us know and send your photos in. We'll then send them in to Bristol City Council and demand an explanation how (or indeed IF) all that cash is being reinvested back into maintaining Bristol's road network.

You can also take action yourself and report any offending potholes by clicking on the Bristol City Council website, emailing them at customer.services@bristol.gov.uk, or calling them on 0117 922 2100.

The time has come, fellow Bristolians. Citizens and road users of the city unite and beat the blight of those unsightly and hazardous potholes once and for all.
