A concert exploring music and art at the RWA in Bristol on the 7th June

Music and Art, a new production by the people behind New Music in the South West (NMSW) and the Royal West of England Academy of Art (RWA), seeks to explore the complex and often misunderstood relationship between music and art.

The two disciplines are explored in some detail, as visitors and artists alike are invited to ask – how does one define the relationship between music and art, and how might a work of visual art be re-imagined as music or vice versa.

NMSW has invited composers to create all new pieces in direct response to a piece of art by a contemporary artist. This will culminate in a concert that expands the interface between the two arts, a real piece of interactive performance art unlike any other.

The concert itself will feature brand new compositions by Geoff Poole, Jean-Peal Metzger, and Litha Efthymiou, which were written in response to works of Shanghai based artist Zhang Enli, and the work exhibited in the Ingram Collection of Modern British Art. There is also a direct collaboration between RWA Academician Fiona Robinson and composer Julian Leeks, who present a compelling and developing conversation between the two disciplines, responding in turn to each others work.

The programme also features the work of György Ligeti and Hildur Guðnadóttir and will be performed by the Bristol Ensemble String Quartet.

Tickets are available from the NMSW website and are £10 with £8 concession tickets also available.
