Sir Ian McKellen to take on one of Shakespeare’s greatest roles in Bristol

Posted on: 21 Mar 2024

The British acting titan will be at The Bristol Hippodrome in July, playing Falstaff in a new take on Shakespeare’s Henry IV – titled Player Kings.

Player Kings will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Wednesday 3 until Saturday 6 July 2024.

Dubbed ‘one of the world’s greatest actors’ by The Times, Sir Ian McKellen will take on the role of the larger-than-life Sir John Falstaff in this new Shakespeare adaptation from award-winning writer and director Robert Icke. A divided country, leadership crumbling, corruption in the air. Welcome to England.

General sale tickets for this show go on sale at 10 AM this Friday 22 March.

Joining the already announced Sir Ian McKellen (Lord Of The Rings, X Men) as Falstaff are Toheeb Jimoh as Hal (Ted Lasso & Romeo and Juliet, The Almeida) and Richard Coyle (Ink, The Almeida/West End and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore) as King Henry IV.

Hal wasn’t born to be the king. Only now, it seems that he will be. His father longs for him to leave behind his friends in the taverns of Eastcheap, most notably the infamous John Falstaff. War brews on the horizon, but will Hal ever come good?

Bringing together Shakespeare’s two great history plays – namely Henry IV, parts I and II – into the theatrical event of the year, Players Kings will reign over the UK this summer. This dramatic new piece will be brought to life by acclaimed writer and director Robert Icke, known for Animal Farm, Oedipus, Children of Nora, The Doctor and more.

The cast is completed by Raphael Akuwudike, Sara Beharrell, Samuel Edward-Cook, Geoffrey Freshwater, James Garnon, Alice Hayes, Henry Jenkinson, Nigel Lister, Annette McLaughlin, Mark Monero, Hywel Morgan, Joseph Mydell, Clare Perkins, Daniel Rabin, David Semark, David Shelley, Robin Soans, Tafline Steen, Perry Williams.

Player Kings will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Wednesday 3 until Saturday 6 July 2024 with general sale tickets available from 10 AM this Friday 22 March – secure yours HERE.
