Posted on: 30 Apr 2024

Massive Attack’s first show in five years, Act 1.5, is happening this August – and they’ve just announced four huge special guests.

Massive Attack, Bristol’s beloved trip-hop pioneers, recently announced their first show in five years: referred to as Act 1.5: Climate Action Accelerator, the show is said to mark the culmination of 25 years of climate activism on the part of the band, and will ‘trial new standards for the decarbonisation of live music’.

Now, after months of hype, the band have offered a tasty new morsel of information for fans: the line-up of supports for the show, which is fast becoming a mini-festival in scale and value.

First up on the prestigious list is award-winning Atlanta rapper and one half of Run the Jewels, Killer Mike. One of the biggest names in hip-hop right now, Killer Mike has four Grammys to his name, as well as being the winner of the first ever Billboard Change Maker Award, created to recognize an artist or group that speaks “truth to power through their music and celebrity”.

Known for his boneshaking, white-knuckle bars, KM blends funk, soul and influences from across the south into his nonetheless crisp and contemporary hip-hop. A team-up with Massive Attack is a colossal win for music fans, and not one to be missed.

Next on the support list is multi-award winning Irish folk group, Lankum (née Lynched), whose take on folk has been praised as intense, dark, powerful, and with flavours of more contemporary and experimental groups like Swans. Whilst the combo of trip-hop and folk may seem unusual, this idiosyncratic folk four-piece are anything but usual.

Speaking of unusual, Act 1.5 will also see the duo Sam Morton – a collaboration between actress Samantha Morton (Synecodche, New York/The Walking Dead/Longford) and pioneering producer Richard Russell – present one of their fledgling performances: a blend of spoken word, lo-fi beats and “Eno-esque ambience”. Finally, the event will also be supported by long-time collaborator of Massive Attack and founding member of The Wild Bunch, DJ Milo – a treat for longtime fans.

It’s a near-mythic gig – and one for good, too: MA have claimed the gig will be 100% powered by renewable energy, and have partnered with green and climate organisations Ecocricity, Grid Faeries, Race to Zero, Zenobe, Novara Media and Train Hugger for the gig, and will be sharing initiatives to promote climate-friendly travel to the gig, as well as other green initiatives.

Act 1.5: Climate Action Accelerator will take place at the Downs on 25 August 2024. For tickets, head here.
