Reminder: DIASPORA! Festival debuts this weekend

Posted on: 30 Apr 2024

The brand-new DIASPORA! will take place this weekend for the Early May Bank Holiday with almost 40 venues and over 70 events planned with nearly 200 artists.

DIASPORA! is an extensive celebration of cultural diversity through art in all its various forms. With a focus on community engagement, the festival aims to platform artists from underrepresented diasporas to perform, exhibit, screen, hold classes and talks on music, visual arts, film, theatre, poetry, dance, crafts, storytelling and more.

The festival launches this Friday, 3 May, with a fire-lit opening ceremony at Trinity Centre – a “glorious celebration of Bristol’s many cultural communities and their various traditions related to fire.”. Like a miniature festival in itself, the opening party will feature everything from dance, to poetry, music, folklore and more – plus food from Trinity’s Jamaican Hideaway.

This is the first ever edition of DIASPORA!, so they’re sure to be pulling out all the stops – including timing the festival to coincide with the bank holiday this weekend, with events (of which there are over 70) stretching from Friday 3 May to Monday 6 May.

Iconic venues around Bristol and beyond are also taking part in the festival, including Bristol Old Vic, Bristol Cathedral, Museum of Bath at Work, The Watershed, Bristol Ferries, Tobacco Factory, The Greenway Centre, The Plough, ACTA Community Theatre and The Canteen.

Other events throughout the four days include a collaboration with Pangea’s night of joyous global music, a workshop exploring the relationship between science and dance, a performance from the UK’s first all-black improv team, and countless DJs, live music performances and more!

Diverse Artists Network presents DIASPORA! between Friday 3 and Monday 6 May 2024 with an eclectic programme of events planned across Bristol and the South-West – browse the full programme from the festival website.

DIASPORA! Festival is supported by West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, Arts Council England, Quartet Community Foundation and Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District.
