Underfall Yard's walkway is back open to the public following last year’s fire
Posted on: 23 Apr 2024Just in time for sunnier months, the walkway of Bristol’s beloved historic boatyard is open for the public to walk through as well as access the Visitors Centre and Café.
Underfall Yard can be accessed from Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6XG.
One of the most iconic features of Bristol’s beautiful harbourside since the creation of the Floating Harbour in 1809, Underfall Yard has been crucial to its operation and maintenance ever since. Still operational as well as housing the Harbour Master, Dock Engineer and a Visitor Centre/Café, it is one of our city’s most treasured attractions.

In May 2023, a devastating fire destroyed several workshops on the Underfall Yard site dedicated to maritime crafts. Although no one was hurt in the fire, the loss of these workshops has drastically impacted the yard’s operations and the Floating Harbour community.
Since then, The Trust have been working hard on a project to recover and reinstate: cleaning, repairing, rebuilding and saving historical material from the debris as well as making the site safe once again.
In the meantime, visitors can still drop by the Underfall Yard Visitors Centre and Café. The former allows Bristolians and tourists alike to explore the fascinating story of the Floating Harbour through hands-on displays, a massive interactive map and more.
The Underfall Yard Café is the perfect end to a morning stroll around The Docks, a spot where you can enjoy refreshments while taking in one of the best views in Bristol. By supporting the Café, you will be supporting the Trust and their restoration project. The café is closed on Mondays and Bank Holidays.
